Key Characteristics
- Size: Typically stands 8–11 inches (20–28 cm) tall at the shoulder and weighs 5–10 pounds (2.3–4.5 kg).
- Coat: Long, silky, and flowing with no undercoat. The coat is usually white with patches of any color (commonly black, brown, or red).
- Ears: The breed comes in two ear types:
- Papillon (“butterfly”): erect, large ears fringed with long hair.
- Phalène (“moth”): drop ears (fully dropped, like spaniels). Both ear types can appear in the same litter, but the erect-eared Papillon is more common today.
Temperament
- Intelligent: Ranked among the smartest dog breeds, Papillons are quick learners and excel in obedience and agility.
- Friendly and affectionate: They bond closely with their families and enjoy attention.
- Alert and lively: Despite their small size, they’re energetic and curious, often acting like much larger dogs.
